Our Founder Story
My own experience began in 2014 when I graduated in art from Ecole des Beaux-Arts in France. When I returned to Marrakesh, Morocco, to assist my grandfather a very skilled craftsman who used to trade in traditional Moroccan handmade rugs I came into contact with the Moroccan crafts. My grandfather compelled me to study a lot of things about this ancient art, and I would wake up each morning full of energy and enthusiasm to learn. Through his guidance, I learned the value of Moroccan rugs and work that goes into creating them.
Sadly, in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, my grandfather died, and I was lost and heartbroken about the future. For five months, I just could not muster the courage to carry on. I could not return to the workshop and factory where we had made the rugs, and going on without my grandfather was unthinkable. I lost and was desperate for five months until I realized that I had to continue and start anew from where I had left off. My resolve against this big wall was what ultimately spurred me finally. The pandemic had already caused many employees to lose their jobs, as it was hard for them to support their families, and the factory lay dormant. I rang all and sundry myself, personally convincing them to return to the work that we had gathered.
Having come close to crisis, I believed that I had to go in big. I believed that I needed to begin a website Craftily Marrakesh so that there would be more customers, the business could get streamlined, and it could become global. All his friends had lost during the pandemic, and I felt this was the time when I could do something about it. My background as an e-commerce specialist enabled me to design something that would enable artisans such as my grandfather's team to showcase their work to the world. We can, together, provide these skilled artisans with the chance to live comfortably and continue their heritage.This was our impetus to start with the introduction of Marrakesh Craftsmanship, an online platform founded on hope, imagination, and sheer determination of my artisans.I had a clear vision: establishing an online shop that would globalize our Moroccan handwoven rugs and other crafts.
I went to Ms. Karima and Rabiaa, two women who had more than 15 years of experience in rug making. They had worked with my grandfather for a long time, and like all others, they were just struggling to survive. It was not easy to convince them to return to the workshop, but I sat with them and described my long-term vision, and slowly they began to trust me. I provided them with hope for a brighter future, and we went on to do beautiful work that carries on my grandfather's legacy. I am forever grateful to all of our customers who had faith in us right from the start and have supported us ever since. My grandfather's legacy will always be a part of me and what we do. His legacy continues to live on in each rug, each work of craftsmanship, and each step forward into the future.
